This piece started Life as a hand-made necklace that my daughter crafted in Kindergarten, at the age of 5, back in 1983. It consisted of huge clay beads and flat clay pieces, strung on heavy-duty, burlap twine...

As a good mother, I wore it faithfully with every outfit for about 2 weeks, and then it was ceremoniously hung on a wall (near a corner) for many years, until the burlap "string" started to fray.

I was starting to expand from my first assemblages, and "think outside the box," as to what defined "assemblage," to me. Knowing I would never wear the custom-crafted jewelry again, I looked at the pieces, and saw them as primitive pots, and so the basic scuplture then took shape. The rough texture of the clay dictated that I use something to protect any surface that it sat on from damage, so I took some gray suede that I had, and made the base.

As this piece was being photographed for the site, it revealed itself as a wall hanging, rather than a tabletop piece (1st photo), so I will be changing the base to have bumper pads and a hanging wire.
